MONITORING

• NEVERallowapatienttohaveaccesstoanytool,utensil,orobjectthatmight
beusedtounlockordamagecus.
• Beawarethatasuddenmoodswingmaycauseagitatedoraggressivebehavior.

BED SAFETY
• ALWAYSuseHospitalBedSafetyWorkgroup
(HBSW)(http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/beds/modguide.
html)compliantsiderailsintheUPpositionandll
ALLgapstoreducetheriskofentrapment.
• Usesiderailcoversandgapprotectorstohelppreventthepatient’sbody
fromgoingunder,around,throughorbetweenthesiderails.Afailuretodoso
mayresultinseriousinjuryordeathifapatientbecomessuspendedor
entrapped.Poseyoersafullrangeofsiderailpadsand/orgapprotectorsto
covergaps.
• Beforeeachuse,checkcusandstrapsforcracks,tears,and/orexcessive
wearorstretch;crackedorbrokenbucklesorlocks;and/orthathookandloop
adheressecurely,asthesemayallowpatienttoremovecu.Discardifdevice
isdamaged.
• Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutpatientsafety,asktheappropriatemedical
authorityforalternatives.
PoseyKeysMUSTbereadilyavailabletostaatalltimes.Inanemergency,itis
diculttocutthecuswithscissorstofreethepatient.
NOTE:Keepexcessstrapoutofreachtopreventpatientfrompullingstrapand
damagingoropeninglock.
Followthesestepstoapplydevice(repeatsteps1-7onotherlimb):
1. Wrapthecuaroundthepatient’slimb.
2. Insertthemetalpostthroughthemostsuitableadjustmenthole.
3. Securethelocktothepost.
4. Checkforpropertbyinsertingonengerbetweenthecusandthepatient’s
wristorankles.ecusmustbesnugenoughtopreventescape,butnot
interferewithcirculation.
5. Checkthatthelock“clicks”shut.Ifalockisnotcompletelyclosed,itcanpop
open.Beforeleavingthepatient’sside,testthelockbytryingtoopenitwithout
thekey.
6. Wrapthestraparoundthejunctureofamovablepartofthebedframe,outof
thepatient’sreach.Ensurethatthestrapiswrappedaroundtheframeatleast
oncebeforepassingtheendofthestrapthroughthelock.Leavenomorethan
1”(3cm)ofexcessstrapstickingoutofthelock.Pullingonexcessstrapmay
allowthepatienttodamagethelock.
7. Pullrmlyonthestraptoverifythatthelockissecure.

• Cusareattachedinawaythatthepatientisnotabletousehisorherteeth
orotherwiseremovethedevice;

productmaterial.
Useextremecautionwhenusinganytypeofpaddingwiththelimbholder.Ifthe
patientpullsviolently,thepaddingmaycompressandallowthepatienttoremove
thecuandcauseinjurytohimself/herselforothers.
